As Ocean's Eleven and The Italian Job have taught us, thieves can be very creative when pulling off a heist. Last Sunday, however, one car thief upped his game by literally lifting a Jeep Wrangler from an Indiana dealership.
At 6:40 Sunday morning, a truck with a crane pulled up to the LaPorte Chrysler dealership. After parking next to the Wranger, the thief clamped the crane down onto the roof of the car with the jaws of the crane going through both car doors. He or she used the crane to lift the car onto a trailer and then took off.
While I never would condone stealing a car and I am upset for the dealership (and the people who had already purchased the car), I have to grudgingly admire the thief's efficiency. It only took them 6 minutes in and out. At the same time, though, it doesn't make any sense to go to so much trouble to steal a car. The dealership's manager Matt Magnusen believes that the car would be pretty beat up after it was lifted by that crane. I haven't even gotten to the most important question, which is how the thief had access to a crane in the first place. Did he rent it? Why would anyone spend the time and money to get a crane only to steal a now-damaged car?
